Mary Obering, Outside and Inside, Fondazione Giuliani, Rome, 2024.

Fondazione Giuliani is pleased to present Outside and Inside, the first exhibition of American artist Mary Obering (1937-2022) in a European institution. The exhibition is an in-depth exploration of his varied pictorial practice, which has extended to the study of landscape, body, cosmology, mathematics, science and spirituality. Over the almost fifty years of his career, Obering has created seemingly simple and geometric works, juxtaposing the strategies of Minimalism - essential combinations, modularity, repetition - with a personal exploration of form and color. While adhering to the pictorial language of geometric abstraction, he systematically pushed its potential towards more complex territories. It was as if the artist never considered abstraction as an end in itself, but rather what abstraction can contain. Obering has reduced the aesthetics of Minimalism to the essentials using pictorial techniques and materials closer to the art of the Italian Renaissance, characterized by a decisive brushstroke, the stratification of sumptuous colors, gold leaf and tempera.
