Barbara Kasten / Chicago

S. R. Crown Hall
Illinois Institute of Technology
3360 S State St, Chicago, IL

Kasten activated Mies van der Rohe’s iconic S.R. Crown Hall by co-opting IIT students’ Mies-designed worktables and combining them with acrylic elements, creating flexible and modular constructions dependent on geometry and balance. Simultaneously, she captured the extraordinary diffused light of Crown Hall to create a series of photographs dematerializing architectural space into abstraction.
